Excursion Bayeux tour at Caen

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Departure from Caen and drive to Bayeux.

Bayeux, the former capital of the Bessin, was the first French town to be liberated.

The town, fortunately, was not damaged during the war. The cathedral still keeps watch over the town and Bayeux Tapestry presents its unique records of events of 1066 (from the rivalry between Harold and William to the conquest and final Norman victory).

Admire the Bayeux Tapestry displayed in the William The Conqueror Center: It is only in the 18c. that the Tapestry was wrongly attributed to Queen Mathilda. The embroidery in coloured wool on a piece of linen remains the most accurate and lively document to survive from the Middle Ages by providing detailed information on the clothes, ships, arms and general manners of the period.

After this visit, enjoy a time at leisure with the opportunity ever to follow your discovery through the museum or to discover the medieval downtown. The one who wish will have the opportunity to follow your guide for a private visit of the fine Norman Gothic Cathedral. The Cathedral bears the marks of the many changes it has undergone over centuries. Of the Romanesque church (11c.) it remains only the crypt and the lower part of the nave. During the Gothic Period (13c.) has been added a superb chancel and a Norman Gallery. Later additions included the building of side-chapels along the aisles, frescoes and furniture and works of art.
