Excursion Bridges to culture tour at Annaba

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Visit the imposing Basilica of St. Augustine, perched on a hill overlooking Annaba. The church is a contemporary of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur in Paris and is built in the Arab Byzantine style reminiscent of the cathedral of Carthage in Tunisia. St Augustine was bishop here from 396 until 430. A relic of his wrist bone can be found inside the Basilica. He is one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity and is a Catholic and Anglican saint.

A short drive will take you to the old city of Annaba commonly known as " La vielle Ville". The development of the city has gone through several periods. The most important one occurred at the beginning of the 6th century AD, when the city called "Hippone" at that time, moved from the old site of "Zawi ", to be built 3 km away to the north on the hill of Sidi Abi Marwan, thus taking the name of Bouna. Your guide will take you through the historical path of the old city where you will have the opportunity to see Sidi Abou Merouane, the oldest mosque in the region, built in 1033 during the Zirid dynasty.

Stroll through La place d'Armes and enjoy a traditional coffee at a local venue.
