Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Enjoy an unforgettable day at a renowned research station and private reserve situated in Costa Rica’s Central Caribbean. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the rainforest environment and actively participate in ongoing investigations to deepen understanding of biodiversity and conservation efforts.

Learn About Biodiversity & Conservation

Operated by the Veragua Foundation in collaboration with the Biology School of the University of Costa Rica, the station has been conducting studies since 2012 on how environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, and moonlight influence the reproductive behavior of various animal populations. Since 2009, continuous research has been expanding knowledge of the flora and fauna in this largely unexplored region, where much of the biodiversity remains undocumented.

Guided Exploration & Behind-the-Scenes Access

A knowledgeable local biologist and your guide will lead you through exhibits featuring live snakes, frogs, and butterflies, sharing insights on their ecology and significance. Then, visit an exclusive bioterium—an environmentally controlled laboratory area where research animals are raised and maintained for scientific study, testing, and educational purposes.

Aerial Tram Ride Over The Rainforest

Next, embark on an enchanting open-air aerial tram journey above the rainforest canopy. Passing by majestic, 300-year-old trees, you'll enjoy sweeping views of pristine, untouched rainforest within “La Amistad International Park,” a vast trans-boundary protected area shared by Costa Rica and Panama.

Wildlife & Nature Walk Along The Research Trail

Disembark at the river and take a leisurely walk along the research trail alongside the Victoria River. Keep your camera ready—you may even witness the discovery of a new plant or animal species in this rich and largely unexplored ecosystem.

Traditional Costa Rican Lunch & Return

After your immersive experience, enjoy a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch before returning to your ship, carrying memorable insights into the region’s incredible biodiversity and ongoing scientific efforts.
