Excursion A day in the countryside: mountain village and farm lunch tour at Saranda
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience authentic Albanian life in the mountain-nestled village of Dhoksat. Join shepherds and villagers, participate in seasonal farming, and join a traditional lunch with your hosts, sharing dishes such as byrek pastries and local cheese. Crown your day in UNESCO-listed Gjirokaster, where Ottoman architecture and bazaar life transport you through centuries of history.
Dhoksat, Walking Tour, Local Guide
From the port, your journey begins with an hour-and-a-half drive to Doksa, an enchanting mountain village of just 130 residents. With a local member of the community as your guide, discover the history and soul of Albania, where ancient traditions still pulse through daily life. Your immersion begins with a walk along pastures, where you might encounter local herders tending their flocks of sheep and goats. As you weave through the village's tiny alleys and wooden gates with their characteristic, red-tiled roofs, your guide will share stories of Dhoksat's resilience through Albania's communist era.
Farm Experience, Farm Lunch with Local Family
Then, head to your host family's farm, where you'll become part of their daily rhythm. Depending on the season, you might help harvest grapes, tend to beehives, churn fresh butter, or learn the art of raki distillation – each activity offers a glimpse into rural Albanian life. Your connection with the community deepens over a feast in the family’s house. Traditional Albanian flavors and distinct dishes grace the family table. From various types of local byrek (a flaky pastry, either sweet or savory, unique to Albania) to regional cheeses, fresh salads, and seasonal vegetables, it’s a celebration of Albanian culinary heritage.
Gjirokaster
In the afternoon, a half-hour drive takes you to Gjirokaster, the “City of Stone,” where UNESCO-listed Ottoman mansions cascade down the hillside. A visit to the 17th-century Pazar i Vjetër (Old Bazaar) takes you through centuries-old cobblestone streets lined with artisans and merchants trading their handicrafts. Strolling along the city's stone-roofed houses and vibrant marketplace, it’s a fitting finale to your journey through Albania's living history. To finish, return to the ship by coach.
