Excursion A walk in historic charlottetown tour at Charlottetown

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

While the charming capital city of Prince Edward Island may be compact, its role in the history of Canada is outsized. You’ll be brought up to speed on that and more when you meet up with your guide at the pier to begin this relaxed orientation walk from the waterfront into the Charlottetown Heritage District.

As you stroll, you can’t help but admire the Victorian-era gabled houses, leafy squares, and peaceful streets – little changed from when a British sea captain established this settlement named in honor of the wife of George III in the 1850s. This place is a remarkably intact time capsule.

Your guide, an expert in local lore, will share fascinating stories about the founding families and the events that led to Charlottetown hosting a pivotal 1864 conference that laid the groundwork for Confederation – a role that has left it revered as “Canada’s Birthplace” ever since. When the walk wraps up at Founders' Hall, a vibrant food and handicraft market. Either join in for the short walk back to the cruise terminal now or take some more time for free-range exploring the district’s delightful shops and many food temptations.
