Scenic Drive to Matsushima

Join this half-day journey around Matsushima, depart the pier for a picturesque 40-minute drive around this  protected region by its tranquil, island-studded bay. Known for its harmonious blend of nature and heritage on this half day tour. Matsushima has long been admired as one of Japan’s most beautiful vistas.

Zuigan-ji, Godaido

Upon arrival, begin a gentle walking exploration of three of the area’s most treasured sites. Your first stop is Zuigan-ji, one of the Tohoku region’s most esteemed Zen temples. Wander through its atmospheric grounds and admire the intricate gilded and painted sliding doors that reflect centuries of craftsmanship and spiritual devotion. Continue to Godaido, a small yet iconic temple hall perched on a rocky islet beside the pier. Reached via traditional wooden bridges, it offers timeless views over the bay and stands as a symbol of Matsushima’s resilience.

Entsu-in, Zuihoden Mausoleum

Your visit proceeds to the serene Entsu-in, built in 1647 in memory of Date Mitsumune. Its moss-covered paths, delicate gardens and contemplative atmosphere offer a peaceful immersion into classical Japanese aesthetics. Re-board your coach for a short journey to the opulent Zuihoden Mausoleum, resting place of the legendary samurai lord Date Masamune. Designed in the lavish Momoyama style, the mausoleum captivates with its vivid colours, ornate woodwork, and symbolic motifs—an evocative window into the artistry and prestige of the Edo period. At the conclusion of your visit, relax on the return drive to the pier, reflecting on a day shaped by beauty, legacy, and the quiet power of Matsushima Bay.

Note

Please Note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking over uneven and sometimes steep surfaces, with approximately 270 steps in total and a few steps required to get on and off the coach. Walking in Matsushima is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair due to the number of stairs and lack of lifts at the temple sites. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Proper attire is required when entering sacred areas; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted in temple buildings. Guests should bring local currency for personal purchases, as many small vendors do not accept credit cards or U.S. dollars.  Order of visit may vary. Local Tour Guides tend to have a strong accent therefore we urge flexibility.
