Excursion El alamein tour at Alexandria
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Explore one of the deadliest battles of World War II during this somber yet informative, full-day excursion El Alamein.
Depart the pier for the approximate 1.5-2-hour drive west to the village of El Alamein. This village, renowned for its tranquil, scenic beauty and soft, white-sand beaches, is also the site of one of the most decisive battles of World War II. Today, a museum and several war cemeteries commemorate those who died here in battle.
Commonwealth War Cemetery
Upon arrival, your first stop is the Commonwealth War Ceremony. This haunting locale is covered with more than 7,000 tombstones spread over a slope overlooking the desert battlefield. Soldiers from the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, France, Greece, South Africa, East and West Africa, Malaysia, and India who fought for the Allied cause were laid to rest here. The War Graves Commission maintains the cemetery.
El Alamein Museum
Continue with a visit to the historic El Alamein Museum. It features four main halls representing the countries that participated in the Battle of El Alamein, a joint hall exhibiting weapons and tanks, and a series of paintings representing the battle and Egypt's role during the war. Additional exhibits include busts of the generals who planned the battle, and maps and charts showing troop deployments. Camera fees may be applicable inside the museum to take pictures.
Next, proceed for lunch at a local hotel. After lunch, re-board your coach for a visit to the Italian and German war memorials.
Italian and German War Memorials
Approximately four miles (over six kilometres) outside of Alamein on a bluff overlooking the sea, a visit is made to what looks like a hermetically-sealed sandstone fortress. The tombs of German and Italian servicemen are enclosed within the walls of this imposing structure. In the centre stands a memorial obelisk.
Following your visit, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
