Excursion Exploring the volcanic south tour at Roseau
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Visit Dominica's amazing volcanic south on this full day (5.25 hours) excursion. Hike the Waitukubuli National Trail and snorkel Champagne Reef in the protected Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve.
Embark from the wharf for a sightseeing drive to Dominica's southwest coast. Arrive in the community of Soufriere. Begin your two and a half-hour hike up the valley along the newly rebuilt estate road, which provides some insight into conditions in the times of estate operations. Enjoy an easy hike through one of the more volcanic areas rich in island heritage. Explore the area, once well known for large scale sugarcane, citrus and cocoa production, and now largely overgrown with dry forests and village life. Experience the change of terrain as the route alternates between rocky road and the main roadway.
Emerge at the mountain community of Gallion. Stop here for a worthwhile photo opportunity, taking in the view perched above the southwestern coastline. Then make a detour to explore a one of the area's well-known volcanic hot streams. From Gallion, head down the local village track that connects with the highway servicing the Soufriere village.
Reboard your coach for the drive to Champagne Beach and continue to the second part of the day's adventure - snorkeling from the volcanic shoreline at Champagne Beach. Don your snorkel gear for an adventure in Dominica's premier snorkeling site, Champagne Reef.
Experience what it might be like to swim in a glass of champagne as a stream of bubbles rises from a submerged volcanic vent in the sea floor. See the many colorful juvenile and adult fish as well as bright sponges and coral growths. Return to shore for a beach picnic of vegetables and rice, with meat if you choose, and fruit juice.
