St. Vincent Botanical Gardens
Stop by the St. Vincent Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere (preceded by Kew Gardens in London and Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia). Conservation or rare species have been in place in this garden since 1765. Following the "Peace of Paris" in 1763 the newly appointed governor of the Southern British Caribbean islands, Robert Melville, and the military surgeon in St. Vincent, George Young decided to create a Botanic garden, primarily to provide medicinal plants for the military and improve the life and economy of the colony. In the early 18th century great emphasis had been laid on introducing valuable and commercial plants from the East Indies. You will see the Amazona Guildingii or Vincy parrot which is the National bird.
Re-Board your coach for a ride through our historic capital, Kingstown. The 'City of Arches', a bustling hive of activity. Your guide will regale you with stories of the nation while pointing out interesting sights. Pass through local villages typifying Vincentian culture. The Marriaqua Valley, home to many farmers, provides much of the food we eat today.
Montreal Gardens
Above the Marriaqua Valley lies Montreal Gardens. Visit with the owner, Mr. Timothy Vaughan, internationally recognized horticulturist, who has lovingly tended the area into a wonderland of beauty. Walk through and see the babbling brook, the misty hillside and the various themes of the garden. He is an expert in the field and is always willing to discuss gardening. The complex is high in the mountains in a tropical climate with lush vegetation.
Have a refreshing drink while you chat.
From here you take a scenic return journey to the ship.
