Excursion Halifax introductory drive tour at Halifax

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Tour the highlights of Halifax on this roving introductory driving tour. Your excursion begins with a visit to the Citadel Fortress, which dates to the mid-1700s. For more than 75 years, it functioned as the British Imperial bastion of control in North America. From this fine vantage point, enjoy the panoramic view of the harbor and city. The impressive early 19th-century Old Town Clock at the entrance is not to be missed.

Take a relaxing stroll in the attractive Public Gardens. This nine-acre botanical garden is one of the finest Victorian public gardens in North America. Your drive continues past Province House, described by Charles Dickens as a "gem of Georgian architecture." It is also renowned as the location of Canada's original printing press, where the country's first newspaper was published. Today, it is the seat of government and Canada's oldest legislative building.

Pass by the Narrows, where on December 6, 1917, two ships collided causing what is now known as the Halifax Explosion. The tour also stops by the Scotiabank Centre, Halifax's convention center and Historic Properties Complex, where old seaport buildings have been skillfully converted into attractive shops and restaurants.

Afterwards drive back to the seaport, close to the ships berth, to visit the Canadian Immigration Museum at Pier 21, often referred to a Canada's Ellis Island. Here, a maritime historian takes you on a short tour of the museum where over one million immigrants took their first steps in Canada. After your tour, there is time (as little or as much as you like) to spend in the museum before strolling back to the ship which is in close proximity.
