Kalbarri National Park
A road trip from Geraldton to Kalbarri National Park offers a spectacular blend of coastal beauty, rugged outback landscapes, and seaside village of Kalbarri. Departing early from Geraldton, the journey begins with a scenic two-hour drive north along the North West Coastal Highway. As the red earth of the Murchison region comes into view, the turn-off toward Hawks Head Lookout marks the first stop inside Kalbarri National Park. Perched high above the Murchison River, Hawks Head provides panoramic views of dramatic gorges carved through ancient rock - perfect for a peaceful morning break and a few photos to capture the vastness of Western Australia’s inland wilderness.
Kalbarri Skywalk
Continuing deeper into the park, the next highlight is the renowned Kalbarri Skywalk. Here, visitors can step out over the edge of the cliffs on a cantilevered platform offering jaw-dropping views of the Murchison Gorge below. After taking in the scenery, a well-earned picnic lunch awaits at the Kalbarri foreshore.
In the afternoon, the drive shifts back toward the coast, where the Kalbarri Coastal cliffs offer a stunning contrast to the inland gorges. Towering limestone cliffs plunge into the Indian Ocean, with lookout points like Island Rock and Natural Bridge providing breathtaking ocean vistas.
Hutt Lagoon
Just south of Kalbarri, the famous Hutt Lagoon -better known as the Pink Lake - adds a surreal splash of colour to the day. Depending on the time of year and sunlight, its hue can range from bubblegum pink to deep violet, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. As the sun begins to lower, the journey wraps up with a relaxing drive back to Geraldton, full of memories from a day exploring one of Western Australia’s most striking natural regions.
