Excursion medan's history & culture tour at Belawan
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
This half-day orientation offers the chance to see some of the highlights of Medan City, the provincial capital of North Sumatra, and watch a show of traditional dance.
Depart Belawan pier via coach for Medan City, an approximate 15-mile (25-kilometre) drive along the Belmera Highway. Belawan is the third largest port in Indonesia, situated downstream from Medan, on a mangrove-lined estuary at the confluence of the Belawan and Deli Rivers. It is home to over two million inhabitants. The highlights seen are:
Museum of North Sumatra
The Museum of North Sumatra has an extensive collection of dog-eared artefacts covering the North Sumatran history and culture.
Grand Mosque
Drive past the Mesjid Raya or Grand Mosque. Built in 1906 in Moroccan style, the Mosque was designed by a Dutch architect. Its marble was imported from Italy; the chandelier came from Amsterdam, and the stained-glass from China. The grounds contain the tombs of the sultans.
Maimoon Palace
The unique architecture and interior design of this palace gives a distinctive character. Maimoon (or Maimun) Palace was built by Sultan Ma'mun Al-Rashid Alam Perkasat, designed by an Italian architect in 1888. As a legacy of the Malay Sultanate-Deli, Maimoon Palace is dominated by yellow colour, typical Malay.
Tiara Convention Center or Kenanga Garden.
Located approximately seven miles (12 kilometres) from Medan is the Tiara Convention Center or the Kenanga Garden. Enjoy some refreshments while seeing a live performance representing the traditional dances of several of Sumatra's tribes including the Batak, Deli Mali, and Aceh.
Re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier in Belawan.
Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking and some steps to climb to see all sites. Guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair can remain on the coach. Most venues are not wheelchair accessible. Guests must be able to negotiate steps on/off the coach with minimal assistance. Guides may be heavily accented. Due to the limited number of guides and vehicles, all seats on the coach will be utilised.
Local conditions may be challenging, therefore we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit these unique, and somewhat remote destinations. Guides and transport are the best available in the area but may fall short of your expectations. Guides and vehicles charge a premium to relocate to Belawan to assist Silversea guests. In the case the Tiara Convention Center is not available the Kenanga Garden will be visited. This is reflected in the price of the tour. We thank you for your understanding.
