Fishermen’s Co-operative
Your adventure begins at the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative (GFC), a member-owned operation that has grown into the world’s largest processor and exporter of Western Rock Lobster. Inside the modern live holding and processing plant, expert staff will guide you through each step - from receiving boats’ catches to grading, tank systems, and export preparation - providing a clear view of how this prized local species is managed for quality and sustainability.
Along the way, you will learn about the Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus cygnus), including its habitat, the significance of the waters off the Mid West, and how this fishery has become one of Australia’s most valuable. The focus is immersive and informative, with opportunities to see the working systems up close, hear straightforward explanations, and ask questions to deepen your understanding.
Local Lunch
After the factory tour, head to Skeetas, a beloved local restaurant on the marina, for a relaxed seafood lunch. Indulge in regional specialties such as Abrolhos octopus, Shark Bay whiting, and WA Western Rock Lobster, complemented by a glass of wine or craft beer. The casual, coastal setting with views over the foreshore enhances the experience, leaving you with a true taste of Geraldton’s rich seafood heritage and a greater appreciation for the journey from ocean to plate.
