Excursion Oki island hike (moderate) tour at Isole Oki
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover the dramatic landscapes of Nishinoshima, one of the inhabited islands of the Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark, known for its volcanic formations, sweeping grasslands, and striking sea cliffs.
Begin at the towering Matengai Cliff, one of Japan’s highest sheer cliffs, rising 257 meters above the Sea of Japan. From this breathtaking viewpoint, take in panoramic coastal vistas and the vast expanse of green pastures often dotted with freely roaming cows and horses.
From the clifftop, set out on an invigorating downhill hike of approximately 2 km. The trail winds gently along the slopes of the Kuniga coastline, offering remarkable side views of Matengai’s monumental scale. Along the way, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of open fields, rugged coastline, and dramatic rock formations shaped by centuries of erosion. A highlight is the striking Tsutenkyo Arch, a natural opening carved by wind and waves, showcasing the unique geological beauty of the Oki Islands.
Your walk concludes at the scenic Kuniga Coast, where the cliffs rise dramatically from the shoreline and the landscape reflects the raw power of nature. After taking in the final views, return to Urago Port with a deeper appreciation for the island’s wild beauty and geological heritage.
Note
Please note: If it rains, guests must wear a raincoat as umbrellas cannot be used during the hike. There are grazing horses and cows at Matengai Cliff; for safety, do not touch or startle them, avoid walking directly behind them, and watch for animal droppings on the ground. Approximately 2 km of hiking is required for full participation, including about 100 steps during the downhill section.
