Excursion Pei coast & cellar tour at Charlottetown
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Travel along the coast of beautiful Prince Edward Island and enjoy a delightful tasting at a local winery. This step back in time into some genuine PEI history begins with a 45-minute drive from the waterfront to discover two iconic lighthouses on the island.
The mystique surrounding lighthouses is rooted in pragmatism; they were crucial for trade and commerce, vastly increasing the safety of the first mode of transportation used by early settlers. Most lighthouses built before 1873 are octagonal in shape, and were constructed when timber was abundant in the province. Those built after 1873 are square-tapered.
Arrive at Point Prim Lighthouse which stands at 60 feet tall and was built in 1846; today it is PEI's oldest standing lighthouse. Learn more from your guide about these buildings that have outlasted generations and, if their walls could talk, would tell same hair-raising tales. Each lighthouse had its individual day-markings and distinguishing flash patterns, so sailors always know which headlight is ahead of them.
Transfer 30 minutes to the Wood Islands Lighthouse on the Northumberland Strait. At 50 feet in height, this lighthouse began operations in 1876 to aid fishing boats around Wood Island. It has an attached six-room, two story dwelling where the keeper resides.
Make your last stop at the Rossignol Estate Winery for a generous wine tasting paired with Prince Edward Island cheeses; a winning combination. The winery has a 45,000-bottle capacity and produces a variety of premium fruit and table wines made from local produce. Try the 2015 Gold Medal winners: Marechal Foch, Cassis, Liberty Blossom, L'Acadie Blanc, Wild Blueberry and Blackberry Mead.
Make the one-hour return trip to the pier after this pleasant afternoon of discovery and relaxation.
