Excursion Shiratani unsuiko trekking tour at Yakushima

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Experience one of Yakushima’s most enchanting landscapes on a journey that blends breathtaking viewpoints with an immersive trek through ancient forest.

Begin at Kumo no Tenbodai Observatory, a scenic lookout offering sweeping views of Yakushima’s lush mountains. Often brushed by drifting mist, this panorama provides a striking introduction to the island’s dramatic wilderness.

Continue into the legendary Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine, a moss-covered marvel celebrated for inspiring the ethereal world of Princess Mononoke. Wander beneath towering Yakusugi cedars, past vibrant green carpets of moss, and along clear mountain streams that trace the contours of this ancient forest. Every step reveals scenes that feel both otherworldly and deeply serene.

Your trek culminates at Taiko Rock, a natural granite platform overlooking a vast expanse of mountains and valleys. This spectacular vantage point offers a rewarding, wide-open view of Yakushima’s rugged interior—an unforgettable finale to your time within this mystical landscape.

Note

Please note: If the Satsuki Suspension Bridge is closed, the route will be adjusted and the turnaround point will be the Moss-Covered Forest, reducing the total duration to about 7 hours. The trail is rough and uneven, and participants must have good physical fitness and be well prepared. A rustic boxed lunch will be provided at the start of the hike. This experience includes approximately 7 km of walking, with altitudes ranging from 600 m at the starting point to 900 m at the Moss-Covered Forest and 1,050 m at Taiko Rock. Recommended equipment: long sleeves, long pants, waterproof trekking shoes, waterproof jacket and pants, knapsack with waterproof cover, gloves, water bottle, hat or cap, and a towel. This is a full-day trekking experience, and Yakushima receives frequent rainfall. Guests should be prepared for wet and changeable weather.
