Excursion Stirling castle tour at Edinburgh

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

From its spectacular setting, high on a volcanic rock above the River Forth, Stirling Castle has controlled one of the main routes between the Scottish Highlands and the lowlands for centuries, earning the title “key to the kingdom”. Earlier fortifications have given way to today's palatial and beautifully furnished 15th-century residence, the home of the Stuart kings and birthplace of James II.

During a long and bloody history Stirling Castle has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times. Three battles have been fought in its immediate vicinity, two of which were turning points in Scottish history: and a fourth equally important battle took place just a few miles to the north. A number of Scottish Kings and Queens have been baptised, or crowned, or died within or near Stirling Castle. At least one King was murdered nearby: while another committed murder within its walls.  Explore the castle with your guide or on your own then enjoy some free time to explore the town and have some time at leisure.
