Excursion Taste of the ocean – boat adventure around breiðafjörður bay tour at Grundarfjordur

Enjoy this unforgettable boat tour made for birdwatchers and fish-lovers that sails around the unspoiled islands off the shore of the scenic Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Depart the pier and drive 30 minutes in a journey that begins with a picturesque drive past an otherworldly landscape to the town of Stykkishólmur. Board the ferry that takes us on our archipelago adventure and sail through whirlpool currents past numerous islands with strange but beautiful rock formations and basalt columns.

This tour is a treat for birdwatchers, who can see seabirds that nest and breed in the rocks and cliffs and can sometimes be observed from a very short distance, providing excellent photo opportunities. Among the birds nesting here are puffins, cormorants, shags, black guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and several bird species. Occasionally seals can be spotted as they glide around the boat.

The waters in Breiðafjörður Bay are rich in marine life and food. The captain demonstrates this by hauling in a net filled with fresh delicacies. The more adventurous amongst us can sample the catch on the boat. Seafood does not get fresher than this.

Please note: While this excursion is not very active, with only 250 meters of walking form the bus to the ship, guests must have the balance and ability to withstand slippery surfaces and a bumpy boat ride. Warm, layered clothing appropriate to the local weather and flat, good walking shoes are recommended.
