Excursion Te puia geothermal and cultural immersion tour at Tauranga

Rotorua is one of New Zealand's most popular tourist centres, made famous by its Maori culture and thermal waters. Discover New Zealand's natural marvels, its geothermal system on this tour.

From Tauranga, it is a 90-minute drive to Rotorua with your driver-guide, beginning with a scenic journey inland through the kiwifruit country of Te Puke, the 'Kiwifruit Capital of the World'. This small furry fruit, once known as the Chinese gooseberry, has done a great deal to boost the area's prosperity.

Pass through Rotorua, to one of New Zealand's leading cultural and thermal attractions. See young Maori apprentices being taught the ancient art of carving and weaving before discovering the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, Rotorua's largest and best known thermal area. Exploration of the site is on foot, you will pass boiling mud pools and the soaring Pohutu geyser. This incredible display of nature's raw force provides insight into the awesome natural forces at work below. Keep an eye out for the native Kiwi bird, New Zealand's national symbol. Te Puia's Māori cultural performance will transport you back in time, beginning with a spine-tingling wero (challenge) from a Māori warrior followed by a traditional pōwhiri (welcome). You are then invited inside the beautifully carved wharenui (meeting house), to experience a traditional and unique Māori concert.

Afterwards, begin the approximately 90-minute drive back to Tauranga and your ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking with approximately one-half mile (800 metres) of pathway at Te Puia which is along paved and well maintained tracks. This tour is wheelchair accessible; however guests must be able to negotiate a few steps to get on/off the coach. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.
