Step back into history on this insightful tour to the first French convict settlement in New Caledonia. Depart from the terminal in your air-conditioned guided motor coach and head to the Nouville Peninsula, where the penal colony was established in 1863, following the British model of penal servitude.
Once at the site, your guide will lead you through the haunting past of the convicts’ lives. Explore the small chapel, the old administration building, and the bakery -now a museum - while learning about the harsh living conditions and the stories of those who endured them. Some buildings have been renovated over the years, but they still offer a vivid glimpse into the early 19th-century penal system and the resilience of those who lived there.
After the tour, take a brief 15-minute transfer back to the ship, carrying with you a deeper understanding of New Caledonia’s challenging yet fascinating history.
