Excursion Ulva island guided nature walk tour at Stewart Island

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Enchanting Ulva Island, near the inlet entrance, has long been recognised for its special beauty and abundance of bird and plant life. The island is managed by the Department of Conservation as an 'open sanctuary' where native birds can be seen at close quarters.

After a short tender ride to Oban, board the ferry for your transfer across to Ulva Island. Then, commence your guided walk, which takes you over much of the island. Lying within Paterson Inlet, Ulva Island is part of the Rakiura National Park and will offer the opportunity to observe some of the region's rarest species. It is renowned for its birdlife in particular: here, the weka (or Maori hen), the New Zealand kaka, the New Zealand red and yellow crowned parakeet, the tui, the New Zealand bellbird, the kereru (or New Zealand pigeon), the New Zealand fantail, tomtits, Tieke (or saddleback), Mohua (or Yellowhead), titipounamu (or rifleman), pipipi (or brown creeper) are much more than just names. In this tropical forest, the plants are also an exciting area to be explored during your time on shore.

At the end of your walking tour, you will be transferred back to Oban wharf from where you will tender back to the ship.
