Excursion Unesco altamira paleolithic art cave tour at Santander

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Step back in time with a visit to the legendary Altamira Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Discovered in 1879, the cave’s extraordinary prehistoric paintings took over 20 years for scientists to recognize as the work of early humans many thousands of years ago. Though the original cave was closed in 2002 to preserve its delicate artwork, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the impressive ‘Neo Cave’, a meticulously crafted replica, alongside the adjacent museum, offering a vivid glimpse into prehistoric life.

After this fascinating journey into the past, continue to the picturesque town of Santillana del Mar. Known as the “town of three lies” (it’s neither flat, nor is it a town of saints or the sea), it charms visitors with its bright cobbled streets and magnificent tan-colored stone and brick buildings.

Enjoy a leisurely guided walk through this historic town, passing by the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, dedicated to the patron saint of the village. Visit its intriguing cloister and learn about the town’s rich history. Your guide will also point out notable landmarks such as the Tower of Don Borja and the Merino Tower, as well as other beautiful buildings that have preserved the town’s medieval ambiance.

Enjoy some free time to explore independently, browse local shops, or simply soak in the enchanting atmosphere before returning to Santander and your ship.

Note

Please note: This active excursion involves an extensive amount of walking along uneven cobblestone surfaces, with inclines. Some five steps must be navigated at the collegiate church. The tour is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair or have limited mobility. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothes appropriate for the weather and non-slip walking shoes; bring along your preferred sun protection. The order of sights and activities may vary. Altamira Cave is closed on Mondays.
