The town of Ouidah is known as the religious capital of Benin to the numerous festivals with singing, chanting, drumming and dances that take place here. Historically, Ouidah was also one of the busiest of the West African slave embarkation points and is therefore full of important, difficult history.
Depart Cotonou for a one hour drive to Ouidah, considered the voodoo capital city of Benin. Take a history-filled guided walking tour of the Slave Road of Ouidah. Highlights of the tour include the Chacha Square (the slave market), the Tree of Oblivion, Zomayi, the site of the mass grave, the Tree of Return and finally the Door of No Return at the water front, a memorial arch dedicated to the enslaved Africans who were take to the Americas.
After your tour, walk to a restaurant at beach resort for a buffet lunch to discuss the history you just witnessed. Make the return drive to the ship in Cotonou.
