Discover the rich history and cultural heritage of Nagasaki on this immersive and accessible tour. From the cutting-edge Gunkanjima Museum to the scenic charm of Glover Garden, this experience offers a deep dive into Nagasaki’s past and present, along with a taste of its iconic local cuisine.
The tour begins with a visit to the Gunkanjima Museum, where advanced digital technology brings the history of the island to life. Through projection mapping and immersive exhibits, visitors can experience the vibrant atmosphere of Gunkanjima at its peak, when it had the highest population density in the world. The museum highlights the island’s role in Japan’s Industrial Revolution and its designation as a World Heritage Site.
Lunch features Nagasaki Champon, a regional specialty with Chinese influences. This hearty noodle dish is made with a rich white soup from pork or chicken bones, thick noodles, and an assortment of vegetables, meat, and seafood.
The journey continues at Glover Garden, home to beautifully preserved Western-style residences from the late 19th century. These homes belonged to foreign merchants who played a key role in Japan’s modernization. The garden’s cobblestone paths and scenic views of Nagasaki Port provide a glimpse into the city’s past, with three of its buildings designated as important cultural properties by the Japanese government.
The tour includes a brief stop at Glover Hill for shopping and strolling. Here, visitors can explore small shops offering local crafts, souvenirs, and treats.
Note
Please note: This tour involves a little amount of walking of approximately 1.3 miles (approx. 2km) and is specially designed for guests who utilize a wheelchair or a scooter. The tour is on request only and, guests who wish to book this tour are kindly requested to contact shoreconcierge@silversea.com in order to provide further details of their wheelchair or scooter. The tour route avoids steps and stairs. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. An accessible vehicle with a wheelchair lift or ramp will be used for transportation. Guides are not allowed to push wheelchairs. A minimum participation of 5 guests is required to operate the excursion at the advertised rate. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Bring sun protection, a sweater or light jacket, bottled water, and Japanese Yen or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Although credit cards are mostly accepted, Japanese Yen is required for any purchases; guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior to the cruise. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Infrastructure in Nagasaki may be basic, and local conditions may be challenging; coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other ports. Therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique, less-touristic destinations. The cost of providing a tour programme in this area is proportionately more expensive than in neighbouring regions, as vehicles and guides are brought in from the whole region. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. Expect crowds and long lines at the sites visited. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary.
