Excursion 3nt post-cruise south island glaciers tour at Port Chalmers

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Start your adventure with a drive through the city of Dunedin and across the farmlands of Central Otago to the magnificent alpine resort centre of Queenstown. Then drive up through the centre of the South Island to the Mount Cook National Park - a world heritage listed national park. Take a thrilling flightseeing excursion to the Tasman Glacier where your plane lands on the glacier and you walk out on the glacier itself. Then see the glacier from a completely different perspective with a boat trip on the Tasman Glacial Lake. Spend your last night in Christchurch, where building continues apace following the devastating earthquake of 2011. A brief orientation tour of the city shows you the progress being made.

DAY 1 - DEBARKATION/ DUNEDIN/QUEENSTOWN

After disembarkation you are met at Port Chalmers and assisted to your waiting transportation and transferred into the city of Dunedin where a short orientation city tour is given. Dunedin is renowned for its fine collection and Victorian and Edwardian buildings including the famous Railway Station, the Law Courts and The First Church of Otago where gold mining also was mined in substantial quantities during the 1860's. Continuing into Queenstown, enjoy lunch en route near the town of Alexandra. Queenstown has a magnificent setting on the shores of Laske Wakatipu overlooking the Remarkable Ranges. Dinner tonight is at a well-known local restaurant.

DAY 2 - QUEENSTOWN / MT. COOK

Following breakfast this morning, check-out of the hotel. Meet your driver and begin the drive through up the centre of the South Island to Mt. Cook. En route pass the vineyards of the Gibbston Valley & cross the Lindis Pass. Stop for lunch at Omarama, a small town that is a mecca for fishermen and gliders.

Arriving in Mt. Cook head directly to the airport for a spectacular flightseeing experience. You can leave your zoom lens behind as you soar past the highest peak in New Zealand, Aoraki/Mount Cook and your ski plane lands on the Tasman Glacier. Step out onto the snow and breathe the fresh, clean air. Listen carefully to the 'silence'. Reboard your plane and continue on to the town of Mt. Cook. Check-in to the hotel and take a few minutes to freshen up before gathering for dinner in the Panorama Room.

DAY 3 - MT. COOK / CHRISTCHURCH

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before checking out. Then set out for a cruise on the Tasman Glacier terminal lake. With luck, you can approach one of the 'bergs where the incredible variety of different shades of blue will astound you.

Return to the dock at the end of the cruise and continue across the rugged McKenzie Country to Lake Tekapo where lunch is served. Then continue over Burkes Pass and the lovely farming countryside of South Canterbury. Arrive in Christchurch during the late afternoon. Located in the heart of town, overlooking the picturesque Hagley Park and Avon River, the George Hotel is Christchurch's top address for visitors.

Dinner is on your own arrangements.

Overnight at The George, Christchurch, NZ
