Excursion Adachi museum and japanese gardens tour at Sakaiminato

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover the refined beauty of Japanese garden design at Yuushien Garden and experience world-class Japanese art paired with breathtaking “living” gardens at the Adachi Museum of Art.

Yuushien Garden, Daikonshima

Your tour begins at the pier, where you board a comfortable coach for a short drive toward Daikonshima, a small island known for its lush landscapes and traditional cultivation of ginseng and peonies. As you approach Yuushien Garden, the scenery transitions into a world of meticulously arranged ponds, bridges, flowering plants, and traditional architecture. The garden is especially admired for its vibrant peonies, which lend color and fragrance to the grounds.

Adachi Museum of Art

After this peaceful immersion in Japanese horticulture, your journey continues with a 40-minute scenic drive through the rural landscapes of Shimane Prefecture toward the Adachi Museum of Art. Along the way, you may catch glimpses of quiet villages, farmland, and forested hillsides that reflect the slow-paced rhythms of local life. Upon arrival, explore this internationally acclaimed museum, which is treasured not only for its exceptional collection of modern Japanese art—including celebrated works by Yokoyama Taikan—but also for its extraordinary gardens. These gardens are carefully composed to be appreciated from within the museum, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that create the effect of gazing upon living paintings. The harmony of art and nature is central to the museum’s philosophy, and each window reveals a perfectly balanced scene of raked gravel, shaped pines, flowing water, and sculpted landscapes that shift subtly with the seasons.

At the end of your visit, you re-board the coach for your return to the pier, allowing time to reflect on the contrasting yet complementary beauty of Yuushien’s intimate, walkable garden spaces and Adachi Museum’s views.

Note

Please Note: This tour involves moderate amount of walking of approximately 0.5 miles (800 meters), including several steps and stretches of unpaved or uneven surfaces, particularly within Yuushien Garden, which does not offer wheelchair-accessible pathways. As such, this experience is not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility. Guests are encouraged to wear casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes, as well as bring sun protection depending on the season.  Photography is allowed at both locations, though gardens at the Adachi Museum of Art are viewed exclusively from indoors and are not accessible for walking. The coach provides air-conditioning and water but no onboard toilet. Timings may shift slightly due to local traffic or seasonal conditions.
