Leaving Port of Tyne, head north to the historic market town of Alnwick, lying on the south bank of the river Aln and dominated by the stunning Alnwick Castle & The Alnwick Garden.

Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England (after Windsor). It has been home to the Dukes of Northumberland since 1309 and remains a family home today to the 12th Duke and Duchess and their family.

The Castle's origins date back to Norman times and having withstood many battles over the course of time, it is one of the most iconic landmarks of northeast England. Behind the foreboding walls discover, during a private, behind the scenes, privileged access tour, Alnwick's lavish state rooms and an enviable collection of fine art, including paintings by Van Dyck, Canaletto, and Titian. The Northumberland Fusiliers also house their regimental collection here.

The Castle has regularly featured in film and television productions, including Elizabeth and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. More recently the Castle has been used as the location for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.

After lunch take a pleasant walk to The Alnwick Garden, created in the castle grounds during the last decade, it is an innovative, imaginative and stunning garden. The Duchess of Northumberland's vision for a forgotten plot is now a truly 21st century experience and a wonderful combination of spaces, themes, quirkiness and play.

The Alnwick Garden inspires, educates and captures the imagination of young and old alike. Reflecting the glory and spirit of the earlier gardens on the site, The Alnwick Garden uses the talent, expertise and technology of our time. An exclusive tour with one of Alnwick Garden's gardeners will showcase this amazing place. Visit the Serpent Garden with its topiary snake revealing stunning water sculptures, take care in the Poison Garden, marvel at the Grand Cascade and enjoy the colours and perfumes of the structured Ornamental Garden.

After this fascinating visit, enjoy the scenic return drive to the Port of Tyne.
