Excursion Ancient nuragic discovery tour at Cagliari

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Explore the ancient vestiges of the extraordinary Su Nuraxi Fortress during this captivating, half-day sightseeing excursion to Barumini.

Cagliari, Campidano Plains, Grain Fields, Vineyards, Barumini, Su Nuraxi Fortress

Depart the pier with your guide for the scenic, approximately 75-minute drive to Barumini. En route, pass through the fields of grain and vineyards of the fertile Campidano Plains. Barumini assumed considerable relevance after the late-1950s discovery of the extraordinary, Nuragic period Su Nuraxi Fortress and its adjoining village. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the Su Nuraxi and breathe in the ancient atmosphere of this important, well-preserved complex.

Towers, Fortifications, Wall, Inner-Courtyard, Well

The oldest original tower has three floors, reaches a height of approximately 59 feet (about 18 meters), and dates from the 15th century B.C. Surrounding this tower are fortifications built around the 8th century B.C., and consisting of four towers. These towers are surrounded by an enormous wall, forming a large inner-courtyard with a well dug out of the rock, thereby ensuring a water supply for the garrison. In a later period, the fortified curtains were moved further out, forming a polygonal wall topped with tall towers with loopholes.

Village, Buildings, Meeting-Place, Dwellings, Bakeries

Next, a visit is made to the fascinating village, which is comprised of buildings for religious purposes, a meeting-place, and dwellings. The well-preserved remains of the ancient bakeries are particularly interesting, with ovens, kneading tubs, millwheels, and other implements. The Nuraghe settlement of Barumini is one of the main strongholds of a vast network of large and small 'nuraghi' all over this area. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.
