Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience the serene landscapes and time-honoured traditions of Miyazaki during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.
Coastal Drive to Aoshima
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 50-minute drive to Aoshima. Along the way, enjoy views of the Pacific coastline and glimpses of daily life in this relaxed corner of southern Japan. Upon arrival, proceed on-foot from the coach parking area toward the island. A pleasant walk leads you across a bridge spanning the bay and onto Aoshima Island.
Aoshima Shrine
Once on the island, continue across sandy terrain toward the vibrant vermilion buildings of Aoshima Shrine. Nestled within a subtropical grove, the shrine is dedicated to deities associated with love and harmony. Your guided visit introduces the history and spiritual significance of this sacred site. Surrounding the island are unique, naturally formed rock formations often referred to as the “Devil’s Washboard,” their rhythmic stone ridges dramatically shaped by centuries of wave action. After your guided exploration and some free time for photographs or quiet reflection, return to the coach.
Shochu Brewery Visit
Next, re-board your coach and travel approximately one-hour to a local shochu brewery. Shochu, a traditional Japanese distilled spirit, holds a special place in the culture of Kyushu. During your visit, learn about the production process from carefully selected ingredients to fermentation and distillation while gaining insight into the regional character of this celebrated beverage.
At the conclusion of your visit, commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier, arriving with a deeper appreciation for Miyazaki’s spiritual heritage and artisanal traditions.
