Excursion Birding at tacaguma chimp sanctuary with visit afterwards tour at Freetown
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
The forest reserve is located on the hills of the Western Area Peninsula, on the extreme western edge of the country, about 5 km south of the capital Freetown. Traffic however can sometimes be a bit congested so traveling this 5km might take a little longer than usual. It became a national park in 2012 - furthermore UNESCO has accepted the Western Area Peninsula National Park's application as tentative site as UNESCO World Heritage. Upon arrival your guide will take you to the best spot/s to be able to hopefully view some birding species.
Afterwards visit the Tacugama Chimps Sanctuary. Founded in 1995 by two conservationists, the reserve was initially created to enforce wildlife laws and rescue and rehabilitate orphaned chimpanzees. The sanctuary has since grown into an organization that supports a wide range of conservation activities. The Tacugama sanctuary cares for close to 100 chimpanzees on-site.
Drive to a local hotel for lunch and afterwards transfer to the opposite side of Peninsular for some further birding opportunities. Return to the ship.
