Excursion Brittany's buckwheat tradition tour at St Malo

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover one of Brittany’s most emblematic products with a visit to a local buckwheat farm, a hands-on galette-making workshop, and a traditional Breton lunch featuring buckwheat galettes and apple cider.

Buckwheat Farm, Breton Countryside

Depart from the pier in Saint-Malo and enjoy a short 30-minute drive into the Breton countryside near Saint-Coulomb, an area known for its open fields, apple orchards, and strong agricultural traditions. Upon arrival, take part in a guided visit of a traditional buckwheat farm, where your host explains how this ancient grain has shaped Brittany’s food culture for centuries. Learn about cultivation, harvesting, and on-site flour production while walking through the farm’s working areas and surrounding fields.

Saint-Malo, L’Atelier de la Crêpe

Following the farm visit, return toward Saint-Malo with another short 30-minute drive, arriving at L’Atelier de la Crêpe, an internationally recognized crêpe-making school dedicated to preserving Breton culinary craftsmanship. During a hands-on workshop, you will prepare authentic buckwheat batter and learn the proper technique for spreading and cooking your own galette on a traditional billig, the iconic Breton griddle.

Typical Breton lunch with Buckwheat Galettes, Apple Cider Tasting

The experience concludes with a typical Breton lunch, featuring a savory buckwheat galette followed by a sweet wheat-flour crêpe with salted caramel. As tradition dictates, the meal is accompanied by a glass of refreshing apple cider produced by the farm you visited earlier. After lunch, relax during the final short drive of approximately 15 minutes back to the pier in Saint-Malo.
