Excursion Canoeing in the mangrove tour at Amami Oshima
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Mangrove Park. Amami Oshima has the second largest mangrove forest in Japan after that on Iriomote Island in Okinawa Prefecture. The mangroves are concentrated near the central east coast of the island and you can explore them by canoeing on guided tour with rental boats. While best experienced in high tide when more of the smaller offshoots of the river are accessible, canoeing here is a worthwhile experience in low tide, too. After a safety briefing you will embark on a one-hour canoe ride. Follow your guide on the off-shoots of the river and the mangroves.
Next, an approximately 30-minute drive will take you to your next destination where the ocean's majesty is celebrated as well -- a semi-submarine boat excursion. Amami Oshima is known for some of the best scuba diving in the world, and this is a great opportunity to see the coral reefs and abundant marine life up close without getting wet. From the observation deck you will see below sea level for up-close views, which are exceptional in this crystal clear water (weather permitted).
After the one-hour cruise re-board your coach for the short transfer back to the pier.
