Excursion Cap carteret lighthouse tour at Cherbourg
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Located on the west coast, the Cap de Carteret lighthouse rises to over 85 meters above sea level. Its strategic location guides navigators to the “Passage de la Déroute” between the Cotentin and the Channel Islands. Built in 1839, it was the second to last lighthouse in the region to be built. Still in operation since its construction, it was automated in 1976 and guarded until 2012. Today, it opens its doors to visitors wishing to discover this fascinating world. On site, meet Adeline, keeper of the Cap de Carteret. Throughout the visit, learn about her experience, her stories and the history of the lighthouse. Stroll through the various rooms that were once the keepers' bedrooms. Then climb the 58 steps to reach the platform at the top. On a clear day, you will be able to see the Channel Islands, the Ecrehou archipelago, the incredible Hatainville dune and the endless beach of Barneville. Before going back down, take the time to contemplate this unique view. Continue your visit with Arnaud Guerrin's exhibition "Lighthouse from here and elsewhere". On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Fresnel lens, this Norman photographer takes us on a journey through the lighthouses of the world: New Zealand, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Azores, Scotland, Canary Islands, Sicily through Ouessant or Shetland. End your visit with a little gourmet and local break: enjoy a hot drink or apple juice accompanied by cookies from the Maison du Biscuit, a renowned bakery, family-owned for five generations.
Drive back to the pier.
