Excursion Chiloe national park tour at Castro
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
The incredible Chiloé National Park is located by the Pacific Ocean, 58 km South from Castro town and includes zones of dunes, Valdivian temperate rain forests, swamps, and peat bogs. Drive 90 scenic minutes to the park, noting that though the road is paved, it has many curves, so driving is quite slow.
Leave the pier to head South passing next to Chonchi town. Only 9 km before reaching the Park, drive along Huillinco and Cucao Lakes. Throughout this trip, learn about the local flora, fauna and the history of the primitive settlements visited by Charles Darwin in the 1800s. Also pass by Cucao village and hear about the tsunami that this town suffered in 1960.
Upon arrival to the Park, stop by the Visitor's Center to receive an introduction to this 43,000-hectare park, as well as specific hiking instructions so you are ready to start the trek. Your hike today goes along the "El Tepual" trail on mostly flat dirt terrain, and parts of the path are also covered by a boardwalk. Along the walk, observe the many different species of trees, such as coihües, mañios and cypress.
Return drive to re-join the ship.
