Excursion Erddig and llangollen heritage railway tour at Liverpool

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Take a leisurely drive from Liverpool and head over the border from England and into North Wales. Your destination is the country house estate of Erddig.

Erddig is one of the most fascinating houses in Britain and a rare survivor of a typical working estate. On entry to the house pass by the original, fully equipped outhouses, including a historic joiner’s workshop, a smithy, a sawmill, and stables, all intact for you to see.

Erddig is historically important as it offers a glimpse into the lives of a gentry family and their servants during the 18th & 19th centuries. This very well-preserved house is almost as it was when the Yorke family resided here, rooms filled with fine furnishings, textiles, games and musical instruments. The Yorke family occupied their time with music, dominoes, skittles and other fun pastimes.

Erddig is also fascinating because of the unusually close relationship that existed between the family of the house and their servants. A real Downton Abbey! In 1791 the Yorke family began to keep records of their servants with portraits and later photographs, which are displayed along the servants’ corridor.

The servants’ quarters are much as they were when this busy estate required the work of a large staff to maintain its self-sufficient day to day routine.

Leaving Erddig, take the short journey to the charming town of Llangollen to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After some free time in Llangollen to stroll along the bank of the River Dee, see the horsedrawn boats on the canal or browse in quirky shops, board a train at Llangollen Heritage Railway to enjoy the glorious journey through the Dee Valley (an AONB). The entire railway line is within a protected area, and the River Dee is classified as a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest.’

Arrive at the beautifully restored Victorian Carrog Railway Station to join your coach for the return journey to Liverpool.
