Excursion Ganvie village on stilts tour at Cotonou
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover Ganvie, one of the largest lake villages in Africa lying in Lake Nokoué. Depart Cotonou, Benin's de facto capital city for a drive to Abomey-Calavi. Board local canoes across the Nokoué Lake to Ganvie, a massive stilt village.
The village was created in the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries as a means of the Tofinu people to avoid the Fon warriors who were part of the slave trade, capturing people for sale to European traders. The Tofinu people made these waters their home and haven, and to this day Ganvie villagers are still referred to as "water men."
Enjoy exploring this fantastical village, including the floating market and the Lovers' Lane. Attend Egungun dance in one of the houses before your return ride to Abomey-Calavi. Re-board your coach and drive to the ship in Cotonou.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking (approximately 600 meters) with some steps to negotiate, making it less suitable for guests with walking difficulties.
