Excursion Genoa and its legendary food market tour at Genoa

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

The best way to understand a city is often through its food. And that’s doubly true for Genoa, the undisputed foodie capital of Liguria. This guided excursion ventures into the heart of that flavorful intrigue.

MOG

Departing the port by coach, you will step off at the Mercato Orientale of Genova 20 minutes later and step into a sprawling covered piazza of edible wonders. Over its three-century history, this one-of-a-kind marketplace has remained a focal point of the region’s immense culinary and cultural pride. And over the next 90 curated minutes, you will learn much about what that means, and what it tastes like. With your seasoned guide in the lead, browse this warren of stalls and discover local specialties like panissa and farinata, two typical street foods made with chickpea flour. At the wine shop, savor the simple, incomparable delight of focaccia with pesto, an iconic Genovese specialty, and nibble savory local cheeses as you enjoy two glasses of wine chosen for this tasting.

Free-ranging at Piazza De Ferrari

It is just a short walk from the MOG to the heart of the city,  Piazza De Ferrari, with its iconic round fountain at the center and surrounding landmarks demarcating the junction of old and new Genoa. With 90 minutes free for independent exploration here, you might step into the grand Ducal Palace, typically hosting various high-profile art exhibitions. Or opt to visit the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, a Romanesque stunner that dates to the 1100s and has been extensively remodeled in the centuries since. It also famously survived a British bomb strike in WWII; the unexploded ordnance still graces the nave. Or you might prefer to simply wander awhile, engaging in some delightful retail therapy or relaxing at a corner café to watch Genoa be Genoa. Later, at the appointed time and place, rejoin your guide to reboard the coach and return to the port.
