Excursion German military occupation tour at Saint Helier
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Learn about the German military occupation of the Channel Islands in World War II during this half-day journey to Noirmont, the Underground Hospital and Jersey War Tunnels.
Noirmont
Depart the pier for the approximately 30-minute drive along the southern coast of Jersey en route to Noirmont. A string of fortifications was built during the German occupation to protect the coastline, especially at the headland at Noirmont. The main part of the headland was subsequently purchased by the Jersey Government to be retained in its unspoilt state, and serve as a permanent war memorial to those killed in World War II. After a photo stop at Noirmont and a narrative about the German occupation here, re-board your coach and proceed to the Underground Hospital.
Underground Hospital
When German forces occupied Jersey between 1940 and 1945, the local population endured five years of incredible hardship. The Underground Hospital is one of Jersey's most important historical landmarks, and stands as a permanent and poignant reminder of a bleak period in the island's history. To safeguard their possession and as part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall initiative, the Germans launched an enormous programme of defences in Jersey. The tunnels that became the Underground Hospital were only one of many such systems excavated all over the island. A huge supply of labour was required for this initiative and as demand grew, forced labourers became its primary resource.
Jersey War Tunnels
Your last stop is at the Jersey War Tunnels, which present an accurate account of Jersey's occupation by German forces during World War II. Ho8 is the best-known of Jersey's many tunnel complexes built by forced labour under German command. Ending the war as an underground hospital, Ho8 is now home to Captive Island, an award-winning permanent exhibition that enables you to experience the impact of the German military occupation on Jersey and its people. You are 'led' from evacuation, deportation, captivity and siege to eventual liberation. This exhibition serves as both a memorial and a vibrant expression of life during those five years. Following your visit, re-board your coach for the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
