San Francisco, Haight-Ashbury District, Guided Walking Tour, Old Victorian Home Visit
Depart the pier with your guide for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the Haight-Ashbury District. Upon arrival, begin your guided, approximately 2.5-hour walking tour. Your route through this historic district spans a 12-block loop narrated with mostly alternative or counter-culture facts and stories from the 1960s. Along the way, visit an old Victorian home, a guest house and modest museum filled with posters, books, and other period memorabilia. The old Victorian homes in San Francisco were constructed with old-growth redwood trees, and hippies liked these homes because they were gracious and spacious, and accommodated sharing with large families or communes.
Local Landmarks, Colourful Homes, Homes of Rock, Pop, and Folk Music Icons
Next, pass by other local landmarks popularised during the 1960s, including a home that was painted with no less than 21 different earth tones and built by the grandfather of former progressive California Senator, Alan Cranston. From here, explore the Haight's connection with the rock, pop, and folk music of the 1960s, a time when it was rife with icons from those genres. Your guide points out, or mentions, several of the homes in which they resided and/or recorded their music. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
