Excursion Haunted boston – an evening walking tour tour at Boston
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
For 2.5 spine-tingling hours, step back into haunted history on a guided walk that reveals the spectral secrets and chilling stories that Bostonians would just as soon forget.
Your ghostly evening begins with a 30-minute drive by coach to downtown before setting out on foot with your guide. First stop: a grim landmark known as the Hanging Tree, in Boston Common near the old Puritan burial grounds; many a criminal, pirate, and witch met their fate here in Colonial times.
A stroll away is the historic Boston Athenaeum, an 1807 library building long thought to be visited by former patrons and staff who may never have truly left. You won’t go inside, but maybe that’s best – given the tales you'll hear of hauntings linked to the Athenaeum's centuries-old archives. Nearby is the legendary Omni Parker House, hosting US Presidents and literary notables like Dickens and Longfellow since 1855 – and unsettled spirits for nearly as long. Enter this hallowed structure and learn about its famous spectral bellman and frequent bouts of unexplained footsteps and flickering lights.
Founding fathers Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Sam Adams aren’t the only famous entities who lie in rest – or restlessness – at the Granary Burial Ground, your next stop. Many locals are certain this iconic cemetery is haunted; how else to explain the sightings of glowing orbs and shadowy figures moving furtively among the tombstones?
A similar paranormal problem seems to be afoot at the New State House and adjacent Parkman House, an elegant mansion with a chilling history. Once the home of wealthy merchant/philanthropist Francis Parkman, this handsome building has been home to Boston’s Political Club for many years, but there are ghostly presences that apparently meet here, too; staff and visitors alike speak of strange noises, flickering lights, and a sense of cold, oppressive otherworldliness to the place. During the return drive to the pier, we suggest not dwelling on what you’ve just witnessed. Could disturb your sleep.
