Excursion Jamestwon historical walking tour tour at St Helena

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Take a guided tour around lower Jamestown as an introduction to the island of St. Helena and its history. The tour begins at the Wharf (landing area) and goes onto enter the main town square through the archway.

Gain insight into many historic buildings and their uses over the years. A guide leads you at least seven locations which include the Castle Square and Gardens, a peaceful spot in the center of town filled with manicured topiary trees and, in the high season, beautiful flowers.

Stop also at Ladder Hill, one of the island's seven wonders. Built in 1829 as an incline plane to haul manure and provisions from the town to the top of the hill, Jacob's Ladder comprises 699 steps embedded into the steep cliff face.

The final stop is St. James Church - the oldest Anglican Church in the Southern Hemisphere. This impressive structure was built in 1774, but the grounds appear to have served as the site of a church as far back as the 1500s.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, sometimes on uneven surfaces and up and down some stairs, making this tour less suitable for those with limited mobility. A rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
