Discover the splendid, architecture and landmarks of Kalmar during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion. Follow the history from the Middle Ages, through the period of a powerful Sweden in the 18th century until today.
Borgholm, Öland Bridge, Kalmar, Kalmar Castle
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to Kalmer. En route, cross over the approximately 3.7-mile-long (about six-kilometre-long) Öland Bridge. The highlight of Kalmar is its dominating castle. In 1397, the Kalmar Castle was the site of the signing of the Kalmar Union, which united Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark. Perched on a tiny island just off the coast, the castle was rebuilt in the 16th century and now has an almost magical, storybook appearance. The view of the Kalmar Castle from the park, which is arranged in a romantic English style with many unusual plants, is magnificent and offers an excellent photo opportunity. Upon arrival, walk across the old wind jetty for a guided tour of the castle. Afterward, some free time is made available for independent exploration.
Kalmar City Walking Tour, City Centre and Walls, Water Tower, Tripp, Trapp and Trull Houses
Next, re-board your coach and drive past the guest harbour, then continue to the city centre. Upon arrival, take a guided stroll past the walls of the Old City and through small, charming alleys. From here, continue past the water tower, 'Europe Nostra', and the old city wall and city gate from 18th century.
Main Street, Main Square, Kalmar Cathedral, Town Hall
Following your stroll through the city, re-board your coach and drive in the old city centre. Along the way, a stop is made at the main square, Stortorget, site of the 17th-century Cathedral, the largest Baroque church in Sweden. On the opposite side of the square is the Town Hall, built in the Dutch-Renaissance style. Your tour concludes with a brief, guided tour of the Kalmar Cathedral. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometre), at times over uneven, gravel, and cobblestone surfaces and hills, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 60-70 steps at the sites visited. Walking at the Kalmar Castle is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring a sweater or light jacket from the ship. Guests are not permitted inside the Kalmer Cathedral during church services or private functions. The tour sequence may vary.
