Depart the pier for the short ride to nearby Puna, one of nine districts on the Big Island of Hawaii. Its geographical location on the southeast coast puts Puna in proximity to Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Upon arrival, explore the natural beauty and local landmarks of Puna, which also offers easy access to frequent lava activity and ample opportunities to view the effects of previous volcanic eruptions on the 'Land of Frozen Fire'.
Pohoiki, Black-Sand Beach, Turtles
Your first stop is at the new black-sand beach at Pohoiki. Upon arrival, explore and learn about at this incredible natural wonder. The beach has black sand made of basalt and was created by lava flowing into the ocean, which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. During your visit, look for hawksbill and green turtles, which can often be seen basking on the black sands.
Recent & Past Volcanic Eruption & Lava Flow Sites, Painted Church, Shopping
Next, re-board your coach and head to the Star of the Sea Church (Painted Church). En route, see the lower east rift zone that experienced the 2014 and 2018 eruptions first-hand. View existing land areas, homes, buildings, etc. that were destroyed by those eruptions, and new land areas created as a result. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the Painted Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has survived many earthquakes, tsunami threats, volcanic eruptions, and lava flows. Marvel at the vibrant colours, exquisite details, and fascinating stories behind the artwork. Afterward, re-board your coach and proceed for a shopping stop in Hilo, then commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking and standing for approximately one mile (about 1.6 kilometres), at times over uneven, cobblestone, and natural surfaces and steep inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and five-10 steps at the sites visited. Walking in Hilo Town is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
