Excursion Magdalena island natural penguin reserve by speedboat tour at Punta Arenas

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Explore beautiful Magdalena Island, a natural reserve created to protect Magellan Penguins, Cormorants, and other indigenous birds. Punta Arenas is the launching point for a boat trip to the Isla Magdalena to see the more than 100,000 Magellanic penguins at the Monumento Natural Los Pingúinos. A single trail, marked off by rope, is accessible to humans to discover the teeming birdlife here.

Begin your tour with a short drive to the local pier, boarding your speedboat to navigate across the Strait of Magellan to reach Magdalena Island. Upon arriving, enjoy the rare opportunity to observe one of the largest penguin colonies in Southern Chile. There is also time to explore the reserve's picturesque lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views of the area.

Make sure to bring along warm clothing, even in summer; the island can be chilly, particularly if a breeze is blowing across the water.

Note

Please note: A 120-minute/hour boat cruise, with a moderate amount of walking at Magdalena Island over natural, sometimes uneven terrain and a few steps to negotiate to embark/disembark the boat and coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. The speed boat is a local boat with partial protection.  Weather is unpredictable in this region and windy, rainy weather can be expected.
