Makasutu is a palm forest situated on the banks of a beautiful meandering tributary of the Gambia River (Madina Bolong), encompassing many different eco systems including dense forests, savanna and mangrove regions.

The environment encompassing this forest is home to dozens of different bird species, three species of monkeys, monitor lizards, pygmy deer, mongoose to name but a few and if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of migrating baboons that make the forest their home for a number of months each year.

Upon arrival at Makasutu, there will be an introductory talk followed by a walk to the jetty and then board canoes for a paddle on the river. On the river, there will be the opportunity to maybe see fishermen and possibly women collecting oysters from the mangroves, there are also some wonderful views of the region during the canoe ride on the river. After the canoe trip, there is an opportunity to go on a bush walk at Makasutu. Keep a lookout for flora and fauna of the area. Enjoy a local Gambian buffet lunch at Makasutu before taking the 30 minute drive to the Tanje Bird Reserve.

Tanje Bird Reserve

The Tanje Bird Reserve was established in 1993 primarily for its ornithological importance and covers an area of 612 hectares. The current bird species list is 300 from 61 different bird families, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. This large diversity of birds results from the range of habitats present combined with location of Tanji on the coast of West Africa. The reserve has been declared as an important Bird Area by Birdlife International. Species seen regularly on the reserve's lagoons include Black-headed heron, White front plover, Caspian Tern, Western reef heron amongst many.
