Excursion Manaus city tour tour at Manaus
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Begin by departing cross the 450-foot-long floating ramp that connects the dock to the street. This remarkable installation was designed by a Scottish engineer to cope with the annual rise and fall of the river which can be as much as 40 feet. Close by you will see the large yellow Customs building, and the Municipal Market whose wrought ironwork was designed by Gustave Eiffel, imported from Europe.
Continue your panoramic drive passing by the Rio Negro Palace, the former home of a prosperous rubber baron, then on to Sao Sebastian Square. Here you will find Manaus' magnificent Opera House, completed in 1896 during the great rubber boom following 17 years of construction. The wrought iron skeleton of the building was brought from Scotland and the stone from Italy. The Teatro Amazonas, as it is officially called, was rebuilt in 1929 with the most recent renovations in 2013. Today, it can be seen once again in its original glory. Leaving the Opera House, explore the São Sebastian Square at your leisure and perhaps take photographs of the restored former houses of the prosperous rubber barons.
Your drive will continue through the city on your way to the residential and beach-front district of Ponta Negra with its extravagant mansions and lined with luxurious condominiums facing the Rio Negro and the Forest. On the return to the port, your drive will pass by the Vivaldo Lima Stadium. The city's project involved the demolition of the old stadium and a new and modern one built in its place, the Arena da Amazonia. Its exterior structure is designed to evoke the straw baskets that are made by the Indians in the region. In its architecture, several sustainability-friendly were incorporated such as an on-site rainwater recycling system and sewage treatment facilities to reduce the water usage. It was designed to make use of natural ventilation to reduce its consumption of energy. It was also designed to minimize the temperatures inside the structure with features such as a while reflective exterior.
After 4 hours of history and architectural immersion, return to the ship.
