Excursion Monserato hike tour at Bastia

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Start your 3-hour City Hike from Bastia Port, immersing yourself in the charm of this vibrant harbor city as you make your way towards the Oratoire de Monserato, a serene and sacred monument perched above the city. Your journey begins with a visit to the Citadel of Bastia, a historic fortress dating back to the 14th century. As you explore this ancient stronghold, you’ll wander through narrow alleys and stone buildings, all while enjoying stunning panoramic views of Bastia and the Mediterranean Sea. The Citadel's northern gateway, next to the Palais des Gouverneurs, marks the point where you begin your ascent to the Oratoire.

From here, take the Chemin des Fillipines, a delightful 10-minute uphill walk along a stepped lane, offering magnificent views of the town and the surrounding hills. As you approach the Oratoire de Monserato, you’ll arrive at one of Corsica’s most significant spiritual sites.

Once inside the Oratoire, discover the Scala Santa, a replica of the Holy Steps from Saint John of Lateran in Rome, dating back to 1884. Ascend these sacred steps on your knees, a deeply moving and reflective experience, believed to cleanse the soul of all sins.

The Oratoire de Monserato holds special historical significance, as it was built with the blessing of Pope Pius VII in gratitude to Bastia’s citizens for their support of religious victims under Napoleon Bonaparte. After a peaceful moment of reflection, retrace your steps back down the hill and return to Bastia Port, concluding your enriching journey through the heart of Bastia on this 3-hour hike.
