The largest city in the Cyclades, Ermoupoli is built like an amphitheatre around its harbour, and is crowned by the twin peaks of Ano Syros to the north and the Ortodox Vrontado to the south. The city was rebuilt in the early-mid-19th century, and boasts gorgeous Neo-Classical architecture and monuments.
St. Nicholas Church and Apollon Theatre
Your first stop is at the St. Nicholas Church, followed by the Unknown Soldier Monument. From here, stroll amongst the lovely villas of the Vaporia area, also known as 'Little Venice', then pass by the impressive Apollo Theatre, the first opera house of Greece.
Miaoulis Square and Church of the Assumption
Next, continue to Miaoulis Square with its monumental marble platform built for the Syros Philharmonic and Town Hall. Stop by the first high school of modern Greece and a colourful shopping area, then enter the Church of the Assumption to marvel at a masterpiece of religious art, an icon by the painter El Greco.
