Excursion Ostuni the white city & the ancient tradition of olive oil tour at Brindisi

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Experience the splendid, Old World charm and traditions of Ostuni (La Città Bianca), the white city, during this half-day sightseeing excursion with a visit to an olive oil factory.

Ostuni

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 50-minute drive to the hilltop village of Ostuni. Inhabited since the Paleolithic Age, Ostuni was presumably founded by the Messapii, a pre-Roman tribe, and later destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic Wars. Ostuni and its Cathedral were then re-built on their current hilltop location, which overlooks an amazing olive oil plain along the coast. Upon arrival at the parking area, walk to the town centre and begin your guided walking tour of the village.

Ostuni Walking Tour

As you proceed along narrow streets, pass by old arches and stairways, the Cathedral, incredible Baroque-style palaces, whitewashed houses, the remains of 14th-century walls, and charming courtyards with old, single-room apartments that have been converted into little cafés or souvenir shops. The views from Ostuni provide wonderful vistas that abound from all angles, the best of which offer 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding countryside and the Adriatic Sea.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to explore Ostuni at your leisure, stop at terraces for breathtaking vistas overlooking the sea or simply relax with a cappuccino.

Olive Oil Tasting

Next, re-board your coach for a sightseeing drive through Ostuni's countryside, and pass many old olive trees and farmhouses en route to one of its olive oil factories. These country houses were once akin to self-contained villages, and featured defensive walls or towers, churches, peasant dwellings and small olive oil production facilities. A stop is made at one of the country houses to learn about and observe the olive oil production process, and sample the finished product.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.
