Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Embrace the natural splendour and history of Nagoya during this memorable, half-day sightseeing excursion.
Tokugawa Museum
Depart the pier for the approximate 30 minute drive to Tokugawa Art Museum. This museum is world-renowned for its collection of more than 10,000 paintings, swords, craft items, dyed fabrics, and other heirlooms that belonged to the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family. Amongst its vast collection is the Picture Scroll of the Tale of Genji, painted in the 12th century and designated a National Treasure. The collection also includes nine other National Treasures, 52 registered Important Cultural Properties and 45 Important Art Objects. The museum opened in 1935 on the site of former mansion of the feudal lord of the Owari family.
Tokugawa Garden
Next, proceed on-foot to the adjacent Tokugawa Garden, which features a beautiful Japanese landscape garden with a large pond at its centre. The garden used to be part of a retirement residence of the local lords, but was destroyed during the war. In 2001, the garden was restored and reopened to the public in 2004. A large network of walking trails lead around the grounds to a tea house, rest houses and across several bridges. Leaving the Tokugawa Garden, re-board your coach and drive to the Osu-Kannon Temple.
Osu-Kannon Temple
Rebuilt in the 1970s after a fire in 1920 and damage from World War II destroyed sections of it, this famous and beloved temple is a replica of its original design. Prayer flags and red lanterns greet worshippers, and the smell of incense wafts from the main hall. The attractive grounds welcome visitors as well as pigeons, who are kept well-fed by guests and locals. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
